UK Warns Nuclear Power Plant Operator of Cybersecurity Failings
EDF, the company operating nuclear power plants in the UK, is facing increased regulatory attention after an inspection into its cybersecurity practices. The company failed to provide a comprehensive cybersecurity improvement plan, leading to the escalation of regulatory scrutiny. While there is no evidence of successful cyberattacks on British nuclear plants, the Intelligence and Security Committee warned of China's cyber operations targeting the energy sector. Ransomware is identified as the most likely disruptive threat, although nuclear power plant systems have failsafes to prevent radiological accidents. Cyberattacks on power plant operational systems are rare but not unheard of. The National Risk Register highlights that a cyberattack on a nuclear reactor's computer systems could require a controlled shutdown, leading to prolonged energy disruption.
