Hidden Dangers Loom for Subsea Cables, the Invisible Infrastructure of the Internet
Subsea cables are crucial for global internet infrastructure, with over 97% of internet traffic passing through them. However, they face various challenges, including accidental damage, natural disasters, physical attacks, and cyberattacks. The lack of information about cable resilience and capacity is a concern, and national authorities need to clarify their mandate and supervision over these cables. Cooperation and exchange of good practices among authorities are necessary for effective subsea cable protection. A new report by ENISA aims to support EU Member States in supervising telecom networks and core internet infrastructure.
